My Letter To Surrogate Mother, Egg Donor Or Sperm Donor:
Dear Beautiful Soul,
My name is Colomba and my husband’s name is Pat. I am 45 years old. Pat is 46 years old. We both believe age is just a number and we’re young at heart.
How We Met…
It seems that fate brought Pat and I together because we’ve been told we met before I was even born! My mother was selling shoes to a woman with a 1-year-old boy when she was pregnant with me. That boy was Pat and he kicked my mom right in the belly while she tried to fit him with proper shoes. He was an active child and I can tell you that he’s still a very active adult who is just as cheeky!
After this, we never saw each other again until we randomly met by coincidence 23 years later!!! After 5 fun years of dating, we got married. Fast forward to today… we feel proud and lucky that our relationship has held together. This December we will be celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary!
Where We Live…
During our first 10 years of marriage, we moved A LOT. Almost every single year we were in a new place. Even though most people think moving can be dreadful, I saw it as a fun experience that exposed us to different neighborhoods and helped us learn what we want in a home. Almost 8 years ago, we finally settled in our current home a spacious condo in the city. We LOVE where we Our condo overlooks a pretty park and a marina and the lake. I often say that when I look out my window I feel like I’m on vacation every day! Our building is so friendly we know many of our neighbors from all floors and the security staff in the building are like family. The people who live in our building are from all walks of life and all ages. Single, married, young, older, with children and without. It’s a beautiful place to live and our baby will be part of a big family of friends and neighbors.
Right Now…
We don’t have any children so have lots of time for work. Pat runs many parts of his family business with his father. He is hard-working, very dedicated and a super smart businessman. I am a marketing consultant and feel blessed to be able to work freelance from home so I have lots of flexibility in my schedule for work and fun and for the new baby when she or he comes!
Our fertility story…
I’m happy to say that my own personal fertility story is behind me now. After a painful miscarriage and too many unsuccessful attempts at having our own children, my body seemed to give up and went into early menopause. It was a long and hard time for me to accept that I would not have any children of my own. I did a lot of personal growth work and crying! for many years as I came to terms with this and continued to long for a child. I soon learned that with faith and love, that life doesn’t always unfold the way you expect it to and that is OK. My friends have told me and I know in my heart I will be an amazing mother and so we started on this journey to find you! Pat will be a wonderful father. His good-nature is always open to fun and games and at the same time he provides a good example of what it means to have a strong work ethic.
Our Dog…
We have a dog named Albert that we love so much. He is a little angel in a dog’s body. He is certified as a therapy dog to work with children and we volunteer in our community. One look at his face and everyone falls in love. Sometimes total strangers will stop him on the street and kiss him! He is non-shedding, hypoallergenic, and sooo soft. He weighs about 30lbs so he’s not big but he’s big enough to cuddle and hug. Albert is 6 years old now and since he was a puppy we had him spend time with all of the children in our family and friend’s families. All the kids hug and squish him and he just soaks it all in. Albert is pure love and he is going to be an amazing family dog.
Our Life…
The expression Work Hard, Play Hard describes our life very well. We both enjoy working and we also both find plenty of time for fun. When we aren’t working we like to exercise, read, bike ride, go out for dinner, travel and take Albert on trail hikes.
We have travelled to many places and we hope one day we can take our children to see all the many amazing places in the world. We believe that travelling will give them a sense of wonder, experience, culture, humility and gratefulness.
Our Personalities…
I am an optimist, hopeful romantic, and a courageous old soul. Pat is realistic, resilient, and strong. Together we are like the earth and the wind. He pushes me just enough to keep us challenged and I hold him back just enough to stop and smell the roses. We both appreciate and love life. We both have a little fun-crazy streak in us. We have so much to give to a child not only a wonderful home and life but also a tonne of inner guidance and love.
Extended Family…
Both of our families live close enough for us to drive to and we see them regularly. Pat has 2 sisters and I have a sister and brother. Thanks to them, Pat and I have 9 nieces and nephews! They range in age from 4 years old all the way up to 25 years old. Family occasions are lots of fun with ALL these people! Our baby will have amazing cousins to play with, to learn from and who will shower them with love. Both our parents are alive and wonderful grandparents. They will be so happy to have more grandchildren. God willing, we will also have more children so our baby will have brothers or sisters too!
How we View the Surrogate–Intended Parent Relationship…
We hope to begin our journey with you from a place of gratitude and end it in friendship. During the journey we expect to be in contact regularly throughout the process. We want to talk and get updates several times a week and come to all doctor’s appointments with you. We would love for you to have a mid-wife and/or doula and/or birthing coach to support you. We encourage the support of your family and want to be respectful of your choices, so feel it will be important for us to have open communication from the beginning to ensure a positive experience for everyone. We would like to be present at the birth and establish an immediate connection with our baby when they enter the world. Our hope is that we will have a respectful, kind and supportive relationship where we can help you by being present at appointments, provide healthy food, or whatever else your pregnancy requires. We believe the relationship we have after the birth will depend on what develops during the pregnancy, but we would like you to know that we are open to sending you updates at milestones in our baby’s life and that when he/she asks questions, we will be open, honest and happy to share their birth story with them.
In Closing…
I hope you have enjoyed our story and if we are the right couple for you, we can’t wait to meet!
Warmly,
Pat & Colomba
